The feminist movement, with its respective political theorizations—which has become increasingly more ubiquitous, developing a diverse range of perspectives—has also taken on the influence exercised by patriarchal ideology within several areas of cultural production. Accordingly, this thesis strives to unpack the contribution that feminism has made to translation studies. In so doing, the study carries out a critical analysis through the lens of feminist translation by comparing the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s with the novel to shed light on the impact of patriarchy in the translation process. Particularly, the intralinguistic and the intersemiotic aspects of the translation process were examined. Finally, it was determined that, beyond the effects of patriarchy on language in general, this prevailing ideological system affects the translation process to such an extent that it manages to fundamentally transform the sense of the message in terms of how ideas are conceived while translating. Therefore, the way in which characters are represented in the target text was changed in order to coincide with patriarchal ideology. Aside from the aforementioned analysis, this thesis seeks not only to encourage reflection on the decision-making process of translators and to question whether or not decisions are made consciously, but also to discuss the role of translators in the development of new alternative methods that, consequently, lend value and importance to translation itself
