This article addresses the problem of the lack of awareness of the particular perspective that mapuche people have regarding the public health care staff. The public health care staff apply the biopsychosocial model to users of the public of the health care system, which constitutes a different wordview from the mapuches. The research is carried out from a phenomenological approach and with a qualitative methodology; responding to the need to build knowledge from the perspective of native people in regions containing a lower mapuche population. The objective is to analyze the mapuche association of Valparaiso’s social representations of the public health care staff. The results of the investigation are three-fold. First, the Mapuche urban concept is dynamic and involves two points of view: the traditional Mapuche and the urban citizen. Second, from each of these points of view emerges particular social representations. Third, through the coexistence of these two perspectives emerges a need to work on the respect that must exist in the relationship between public health personnel and users, which would help in the implementation of intercultural health care
