This paper offers acomparative analysis of both works in order to study how the protagonists of these narratives construct their gender and cultural identity. The objective is to explore how Oscar and Esperanza face their formative process as Latinos in two different diasporic cities. Both characters face thechallenge to piece their ethnicity and cultural inheritance into the puzzle of mainstream society. What kind of adult they want to grow into and what places within contemporary U.S. culture are some common questions in both novels. However, no simple answers are provided. This research will be focused on the construction of gender identity and cultural heritage in their formativeprocess in order to answer these questions</p>
