Assignment: in order to make good use of the tourist potential of Punta Arenas, the idea is to give a habitable public shape to the port space of this extreme climate city, improving its port system.

Objectives: to connect the city to the sea, to augment port capacity, to create protected landing infrastructure and develops the connectivity systems.

Fundamentation: Punta Arenas has been a milestone of worldwide connectivity and trade route thanks to Magellan’s strait. The uncomfortable and complex habitability of the city is determined by intense cold, a low-relief geography and winds that average the 25 Km/h. with bursts of 140 Km/h.

Hypothesis: a) Through the dredging of the port zone and the design of a 750 meters dock, allow the berth of large ships in proximity to the terminal and the city. b) To generate protected spaces and circulations by means of landing infrastructure and a building endowed with deflecting devices that control the winds.

Methodology: Geometric demonstrations, aerodynamical analysis in wind tunnel and dredging calculations by 3D models.

Results: Aerodynamic building and deflecting devices with calm area of 70 meters as maximum projection. The prolongation of a public way as a dock. Approximation of dredging of 50,000 m3.

Conclusions: it is achieved an architectural design for the habitability of extreme climates-public spaces.
