This research was based on the study of the behavior of grounding systems when lightning occurs, since this aspect usually is ignored when implementing a grounding system without paying attention to the transient effects caused by lightning, which cause malfunction, loss of information and destruction of electronic instrumentation. First of all, a study of the lightning discharge is made presenting their origin, physical characteristics, consequences that they produce, as well as its representation with the function of Heidler is introduced. Furthermore, we will analyze the transient behavior that electric discharges of atmospheric origin produce in earthing systems, and the use of single direction electrodes will be considered as a solution to the problems associated to this type of phenomena To this end, the ATPDraw software will be used, which allows to evaluate, on a scientifically justified basis, the fundamental variables that reflect the transient behavior of the ground system
