Modelación de inundación de un tsunami generado por un deslizamiento submarino: comparación entre el Tsunami de Reloca y el Tsunami del 2010 en bahía de Concepción

Resumen dc.description <p>En Chile existe escaso conocimiento respecto a tsunamis generados por deslizamientos submarinos y sus posibles efectos en la costa. Recientemente, se han descubierto evidencias de un gran deslizamiento submarino en el talud continental a la cuadra del r&iacute;o Reloca, a 140 km al noroeste de la bah&iacute;a de Concepci&oacute;n. El deslizamiento submarino es evidenciado por un gran surco excavado en el talud continental y una masa de depositaci&oacute;n en su base. Este dep&oacute;sito est&aacute; conformado por tres grandes bloques que suman un total de 24 km3. An&aacute;lisis preliminares indican que el deslizamiento ocurri&oacute; durante el Holoceno, por lo que se trata geol&oacute;gicamente de un evento relativamente reciente. Con el fin de evaluar la amenaza que conllevar&iacute;a la repetici&oacute;n de un evento similar, se model&oacute; num&eacute;ricamente el tsunami que habr&iacute;a generado este deslizamiento. Junto con obtener las alturas sint&eacute;ticas de las olas, tanto en mar abierto como en la costa, se determin&oacute; el &aacute;rea de inundaci&oacute;n en la cabecera de la bah&iacute;a de Concepci&oacute;n. Con fines comparativos, esta &aacute;rea se contrast&oacute; con la inundaci&oacute;n del tsunami asociado al terremoto del 2010 en la misma bah&iacute;a. Un tsunami generado por un deslizamiento an&aacute;logo al de Reloca inundar&iacute;a dos tercios del &aacute;rea inundada en el 2010. De este modo, se enfatiza la amenaza que representan los grandes deslizamientos submarinos para los asentamientos costeros de Chile</p>
Resumen dc.description <p>In Chile the knowledge on tsunamis caused by submarine landslides and their possible effects on the adjacent coast is scant. Evidences of a great submarine slide in the continental slope off Reloca River, 140 km northwest of the Concepcion Bay, have been recently discovered. The submarine landslide is evidenced by a great scarp excavated in the continental slope and a massive fan on the seafloor. The fan is composed by three big blocks that add up to 24 km3. Preliminary analyses show that the slide occurred at some time during the Holocene, which indicates this is a geologically recent event. In order to evaluate the threat that a repetition of this kind of event could imply, the ensuing tsunami triggered by the slide was numerically modeled. In addition to obtaining synthetic wave height, both offshore and onshore, the inundation area in the headwaters of Conception Bay was determined. For comparative purposes, this area was contrasted with the inundation caused by the tsunami associated to the 2010 earthquake in the same bay. A tsunami triggered by a slide similar to that in Reloca would flood two thirds of the area inundated in 2010. In this way, this paper emphasizes the threat to Chilean coastal settlements that large submarine landslides represent</p>
